USPS has been issuing stamps for decades. You might wonder what expiration dates are for stamps that have been around so long.
So if your desk is cluttered with stamps, don’t worry! Learn more about when USPS stamps run out.
Do USPS Stamps Expire In 2022?
As long as they are in good condition, USPS stamps do not expire. Forever Stamps (issued by USPS in 2007) are non-denominational. They reflect the current rate first-class mailage and do not expire. Also, stamps that have a dollar value do not expire. However, they must be combined to reflect current postage rates.
How can I tell if the stamps from USPS are still in good condition?
One glance will suffice to check if you still have your USPS stamps.
If the stamps you own have the phrase “Forever” written somewhere on them, stick it to an envelope and send the letter by mail. ).
Forever Stamps are considered “non-denominated” by the USPS. The stamps are not tagged with any value to indicate their worth.
The current value of first class postage affects the value of Forever Stamps. This means that a Forever Stamp’s value will always be the same as first-class mail.
Forever Stamps, purchased now, will continue to be valid for first-class shipping, regardless of the fact that they are cheaper.
Besides Forever Stamps, USPS also sells stamps that have a number followed by the cent symbol (C/). The stamps come in different denominations like 1C/2, 2C/3, 3C/ 5C/ and10C/.
These stamps are available for use whenever you want. For the best selection, be sure to look at current prices for postage.
Once you know how much postage costs, you can combine as many cent stamps as needed.
It’s worth noting that stamps with a monetary value may have a year printed on them.
This shows the year USPS adopted the stamp. It does not have to do with an expiration. Similar to Forever Stamps these stamps never expire.
Are Old USPS Stamps Still Acceptable?
In most cases, yes you can. All old stamps are valid as long the USPS certifies them to be legitimate mail.
If the stamp adheres to an envelope and is in good condition, it will be considered legal.
USPS can reject a stamp that is damaged. Some reasons a stamp may be rejected include:
The stamp’s adhesiveness has been lost. The USPS rejects stamps that have been covered in tape or glue.
You can bring any questions about the stamps in your junk drawer to USPS for a final determination.
How Long Are USPS Forever Stamps Good For?
As the name suggests, USPS Forever Stamps have a lifetime validity.
Forever Stamps do not have a fixed value, unlike stamps in the past which had a monetary value. Rather, their value changes in function of the USPS’ postage rate.
The current rate of first-class mailage will apply to your Forever Stamp purchase
Your Forever Stamp is valid for the value of first class postage if it’s not used within five years.
To make it clearer, let’s take a look at an illustration. The cost for first-class mailage in 2007 was $0.41, the year Forever Stamps were launched.
It was currently $0.58. Forever Stamps can be purchased from 2007 to 2020 for $0.58.
Are Global Forever(r), Stamps Expiring?
Like domestic Forever Stamps (USPS), the USPS Global Forever(r), Stamps do not expire.
Global Forever(r), stamps, are available as part of USPS First Class Mail International(r), (FCMI). They’re the most affordable way to send letters and postcards to more than 180 countries including Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.
For one flat price, one Global Forever(r), stamp can be used to send 1oz letter or postcards almost anywhere on Earth.
Even though postage costs go up, stamps remain valid and can still get mail to where it is needed.
How long do USPS shipping labels expire?
USPS shipping tags have an expiration period, just like stamps. Technically, USPS shipping labels are “expired” after 28 days from the date they were purchased.
It is the officially cutoff date of day 28, but this isn’t a rigid rule. USPS allows you to use shipping labels for a two-to three day grace period.
However, every Post Office can exercise its own discretion.
You can request to speak with the Postmaster if the Post Office mail clerk refuses to accept labels you feel are within acceptable limits.
Don’t be alarmed if they don’t budge! When you buy them, USPS won’t scan the labels.
This means that the tracking numbers do not enter their systems. The online shipping software will allow you to request a full refund and then use that refund to purchase a new label.
You can read related posts about USPS to learn more: whether USPS notarizes documents; if USPS needs signature; and how long USPS keeps packages.
USPS stamps are non-expiring as a rule. These include both USPS stamps that are denominational, Forever Stamps or Global Forever(r), as well. You should not have any problems using your stamps as long as they are intact, undamaged, and adherent.
USPS labels for shipping are valid even though USPS stamps can’t be renewed. The validity of shipping labels is 28 days after purchase. However, depending on where you live, there may be a few extra days or weeks.
