The bottom line is that it was comfortable. We tested it and it worked well in our cribs. The mattress is extremely comfortable. The Wovenaire crib mattresses have a lot going for them. There are some good things, but there is also much to dislike: the heavy coil springs as well as polyurethane and latex foams. Newton warns parents not to cover their mattress with any other than a zip-off mattress cover. It is washable and highly breathable. Newton’s mattress is perfectly squared to fit into the crib. Newton claims the entire core can be recycled, but I’m not sure how you will manage to put it in your recycle bin. Unfortunately, a core made of polymer isn’t natural. We do however appreciate its food-grade and Greenguard GOLD certification. Although the Newton Wovenaire can be purchased for $299 (though they sometimes have discount on Amazon), all of the greatness comes with a steep price. Naturepedic is a crib mattress that stands out because of its superior organic construction and breathability. To test the Naturepedic Breathable mattress, we bought it late last summer. This American made organic mattress comes with high-quality materials. There are two levels of firmness: one on the baby side, and one on the toddler side. Additionally you have the option to choose from either coil springs cores or lighter wavesupport. We chose the more traditional coil core rather than the wavesupport polyethylene core. It has organic cotton padding and 252 springs. The cover is organic. In our experience, a coil core helps the mattress avoid developing indentations or lumps over time, maintain good support over the course of several years, and you don’t need to worry about nasty off-gassing from a foam core. Although they are heavier at 19 pounds and more costly, coil cores can be a good option. It meets Greenguard Gold and Greenguard GOTS certifications. The mattress also has seamless edges, square corners, excellent reviews, and is available in a variety of sizes. It’s hypoallergenic. This is not only the cover. We were impressed by the ease of cleaning and removal of this organic cotton covering. The whole mattress had no odor and fit snugly into our Babyletto test crib. We expect this to last for a very long time. On the mattress cover is a tag that states it’s made of organic fiber batt and non GMO PLA batt (polylactide). It looks great, feels amazing, and smells wonderful. For dual-firmness the toddler side has a firmer feel than the infant side. The seams and stitching are high quality, the cover is breathable and comfortable, and the waterproof core liner is organic cotton fabric with a waterproof coating.
This mattress has a unique feature: the cover, which is breathable and not zip-off is fitted like a sheet. This is why it’s so amazing. The mattress, which is made of coil springs, weighs in at 19 pounds. Because it’s so heavy, you will have to lift the whole crib apart for any cover adjustments. The Avocado does not have a waterproof layer, or a 3D mesh breathable cover. However, it does have a beautifully quilted surface and a fully organic construction with GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, and Greenguard GOLD certification. Avocado came to our attention for testing. Its quality construction and materials were amazing. This mattress offers all that parents would expect, such as organic certifications, organic coconut husk and latex, a durable surface, core and beautiful handmade construction, right here at home in California. Importantly, this mattress doesn’t contain polyurethane, polyurethane foam or chemical adhesives/flame retardants. Vinyl, heavy metal springs and chemical flame retardants. It sounds cheesy, but it is truly amazing. Made in the USA, Emily crib mattresses are very high quality and certified organic. They also hold GOTS, Greenguard GOLD and GOLS certifications. Emily features a 150 spring coil core and organic wool overlaid with a cotton quilted cotton covering. It has little needle perforations to promote breathability, and you combine that with the wool under-layer and you have a great combination for keeping things cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It is covered with a plush, soft cover and a high-quality core mattress. This includes 150 coil innersprings as well as corner and edge supports. This mattress ships flat which is our preferred choice. The mattress arrived flat in its box. We couldn’t detect any smell. When we put it into the crib, it fit snugly into the edges and corners. The firmness was perfect for babies, but it wasn’t too hard for toddlers. It is very similar to the Newton Wovenaire and provides comfort for all ages. It is waterproof, breathable, double-firm, MADE SAFE and odourless. For only about $250? Sounds great! It’s a very well-received crib mattress, the Lullaby Earth. The brand new, dual-firmness, Greenguard Gold and Made SAFE certified crib mattress has a 6 inch thickness and seamless edges. It also includes waterproof covers with a breathable top and a waterproof cover. This WaveSupport core uses the same WaveSupport material as Naturepedic. MADE SAFE Certification has many advantages. They require minimal VOC emissions while passing rigorous tests on all material used. The toddler side of the mattress was more soft than the infant. It is almost squared at the corners, somewhere between squared edges and rounded edges. It fit perfectly in our DaVinci (test) crib. Due to its slightly rounded edges there is more chance of dropping pacifiers or losing them. The Lullaby Earth mattress was very lightweight, maybe a few ounces less than the Colgate even, so changing sheets was a breeze. It is made of a 3D mesh that’s highly breathable and has a waterproof non-vinyl backing. The cover can be machine-washed. The outer mattress lining can be easily washed and maintains a seamless edge. All of the mattress has been made in USA. The construction seems solid and the long-term durability is good. Cons? Cons: Nothing significant! We love the waterproof cover and its breathable surface. However, waterproof layers are likely to contain plastics or chemicals. The mattress’ core is MADE SAFE certified. It is not clear if the cover is. Outside of that, we think the Lullaby Earth Breeze crib mattress is a great option for discerning parents! We are not the only ones who love Lullaby Earth. DaVinci test cribs. Cons? Well, we couldn’t help but compare it to the Avocado, which we know and love. Avocado’s transparency is excellent, as are organic certifications. Greenguard GOLD, MADE SAFE and GOTS. It can be hard to identify which Nook certifications they have. The Avocado’s toddler version is slightly softer due to their cozy wool layers. A waterproof cover was expected at the price. However, it’s very difficult to find a cover for organic crib mattresses. Removable covers are the only thing that is better than the Avocado. The Nook is twice as expensive than the Avocado. This makes it a bit more difficult to compare features. Overall, we think it’s a great option with some small drawbacks, including the steep price. This mattress boasts many outstanding features. This mattress has two sides, one for babies and another for children. Second, it is hypoallergenic and dust mite and allergen resistant. The core does not contain any polyurethane foam and is therefore non-toxic. Instead, the Newton Wovenaire core uses a 100% polyester fabric. Greenguard GOLD-certified, it doesn’t contain vinyl, PVC or chemical flame retardants. This core can be recycled. You just need to cut it up into pieces and throw it away. There is also a layer of batting made out modacrylic fiber or polyester. What is modacrylic fiber? Modacrylic fiber is a synthetic acrylic fiber which is mildew resistant, hypoallergenic and extremely durable. It also has a cotton cover that can zip on or off with ease and can be machine washed. They call this the “hybrid” cover since it has a soft cotton top and waterproof liner bottom. Finally, we thought the Babyletto Pure was comfortable and fit amazingly well into our Babyletto and DaVinci cribs. This babyletto pure is snug and secure as a bug. Both sides had a nice structure – the one on the infant side was firm, while the opposite side was perfect for toddlers. Cons? A couple of minor points. The zipper at the cover was lower quality than expected. We also thought it might break very soon. However, it isn’t currently broken but this could change. After machine washing, the cover began to shrink and it was difficult for the mattress to conform. It was also made in Taiwan and not in the USA. Overall this is an excellent crib mattress with only a few downfalls worth considering.
