Getting Started
A bassinet may seem small but portable. It’s not as practical or cute as you might think. Baby outgrows bassinets by around 4 months. A crib, in addition to being the most secure place for babies to sleep, is ideal.
ASTM International, formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International), has set voluntary standards for some bassinets. However, full-sized cribs are required to conform to federal safety standards and may be recall if they do not.
There are no federal standards specifically for bassinets, cradles, Moses baskets, or bedside sleepers beyond those for such items as small parts and rough edges, and the spacing of rails. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which will ultimately establish requirements for many infant products and including bassinets, will also be mandatory.
ASTM has also developed voluntary standards for cribs and is working on bedside sleepers. A bedside sleeper is not recommended as they can cause babies to slip through the gaps between adults and sleepers. If you want your baby nearby, keep the crib or bassinet close to your bed. The cradles are not as popular as bassinets and should move gently. The cradle should not rock too hard. A rocking motion that is too loud can cause the infant to fall against one side. The ASTM standard can be voluntarily adopted by bassinet and crib manufacturers. For proof of compliance, check for a Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association seal. This certification may provide assurance that product meets safety standards following lab testing. There are products that might be categorized as bassets but don’t carry a JPMA certificate. Consumer Reports does not test cradles or bassinets. We think a crib is the best place for your baby to sleep from birth up to about age 4. Check out our Crib Ratings. There is a danger that some cribs could cause infants to roll over and drown. There were 24,000 Amby Baby Motion Beds that were being recalled in 2009 after the deaths of two children. The small hammock-style baby cradle was suspended from the frame. Because of tilting and side-to–side shifting, the infants became trapped and/or wedged against the hammock’s material and/or mattress pad. This basket may look cute, but it can be dangerous for babies who are still unable to control their head or neck with quilted material. Moses baskets shouldn’t be used.
Many parents opt for a bassinet or something like it because they think a newborn or young infant will feel more comfortable in a compact space rather than a large crib. A full-sized crib with a fitted sheet, no blankets, bumpers or pillows (see Cribs Guide) is best for babies. For warmth, your baby should lie on its back, with a wearable blanket, footed or sleep sack. A comforter or blanket that is too large should be used.
Recommendations. You need to first decide if you are really going to use a cradle, or a bassinet. If yes, purchase a basic model with JPMA Certification.
The safest way to go is to get a crib as soon as possible. You can put it in your bedroom (if it fits), then move it to your nursery when your baby is about 6 months old.

Since many years, Snoo has been recommended. The only smart, intelligent bassinet was created by Dr. Harvey Karp. He is well known for his book on “5S’s” to get kids to sleep. He described the Snoo to me as an extra pair of hands to rock a baby back to sleep and believes it can add an hour or two of slumber to an average baby’s night. My experience confirms his claims.
Snoo hears your baby and will react. When they cry, the motion begins as a gentle side-toside movement with a watery sound. A Jello jiggle is the most intense phase, which is often accompanied with more white noise. There is an app available for Android as well as iPhone that tracks sleep patterns. You can also tweak the way your baby responds to it. The app sends you a notice if your baby becomes distressed at level 5. I preferred to turn it down to low and try to adjust its sensitivity.
