NFC, or near field communication, has made contactless payments the most secure and convenient way to pay with thousands of retailers and grocers.
Apple is one of the companies that rely upon NFC in order to provide support for its Apple Pay technology. It allows iPhone users pay online or at cash registers using their Apple Wallet.
What about Apple Pay? Does USPS accept it? Below is the answer to your question – you may be surprised.
Is the USPS going to Apple Pay in 2022?
As of 2022, the United States Postal Service has stopped accepting Apple Pay and other NFC payments online. Customers will be limited to traditional payment methods like credit and cash. Current card readers support NFC but USPS still keeps this technology disabled.
Why isn’t USPS accepting Apple Pay?
USPS has yet to issue a formal statement explaining why Apple Pay is not accepted by them, but some Redditors believe so.
The USPS has access to sensitive information of millions of individuals. Additionally, as a federal agency, its regulations are quite strict.
It could be the reason why post offices do not accept Near-Field Communication (NFC), such as Apple Pay.
This is also a good sign, because the credit card machines at my local Post Office, even being set up for Apple Pay or NFC, only processed basic debit cards transactions very slowly.
Because of its high-speed machinery and federal status, it’s not surprising that Apple Pay has been rejected by USPS.
What forms of payments does USPS take?
Although they don’t offer the most advanced payment methods, USPS still accepts other forms of payment in its post offices as well as online. They include:

Does USPS Take Samsung Pay?
Strangely, while Apple Pay may not be accepted in certain locations, other post offices accept Samsung Pay as well.
Customers also reported finding more updated kiosks in their local post offices. Samsung Pay card users that have the cards above tied into their account have been permitted to use these devices.
Although contactless payment is not an option at most post offices, it does exist in some.
These locations, however, do not as of yet accept Apple Pay. Samsung phones can instead use SamsungPay to make payments.
It seems like the Samsung Pay system is caught on guard by clerks.
Redditor One commented that they needed to sign and enter their PIN.
So while the NFC works, it’s not technically 100 percent “contactless,” because you do have to use the pin pad and a pen.
And another commenter ran into a bit of resistance when they successfully used contactless pay – the manager informed them it was against “company policy” to accept any smartphone payment method.
Maybe the location didn’t disable NFC.
PayPal allows you to pay the USPS
USPS and PayPal revealed in June 2012 that PayPal customers will be able check out online.
The payment method is available only online, using USPS’s Click-N-Ship service.
This is a much-loved benefit as some customers prefer this method over using their cards directly, as PayPal – like Apple Pay – adds an extra layer of security to transactions.
PayPal can be used to make payments without having your card information entered into the USPS website.
This arrangement was convenient for consumers because most online merchants already use PayPal to receive payment for goods and services.

Although Apple Pay is currently not accepted at USPS, there are clearly all of the necessary pieces for it.
Along with accepting major credit/debit cards and Paypal (online), USPS appears to accept Samsung Pay in some of their post office locations.
