Superstore, which was 30-minutes in length and centered on the daily lives of several employees working at big discount stores, received a lot of laughs from viewers between 2015-March 2021.
Walmart is Superstore.
While Cloud 9, the hypermarket featured in the sitcom Superstore, bears many similarities to the real-life retail chain Walmart, no one associated with the show has ever indicated officially that Walmart is indeed the basis for the fictional location. Cloud 9 contains elements of both Walmart and Target, with the latter named as a rival.
Is Cloud 9 Real?
Cloud 9 is the fictional hypermarket that Superstore portrays. It’s fictional but it does bear many similarities to the real-life big-box stores.
Cloud 9 corporate, according to Superstore Wiki Page, is based out of Chicago. However they have locations throughout the world.
There are many things that can be criticized about its employment arrangements. For example, employees do not get paid overtime, nor health insurance.
Only one shift per employee at Cloud9 can use the restroom, while employees only get 15 minutes to eat lunch.
Similar to real corporate offices, the main office controls all locks, music and temperature for each store.
Cloud 9 shares a similar store brand to Walmart’s Great Value. At first, the name was Halo. But, later, it changed to SuperCloud.
Is Superstore A Parody Of Walmart?
Superstore can be described as a parody on the Walmart experience if Oxford Languages is taken at its word.
Superstore is likely to be outdone by the Walmart real Walmart in the exaggeration department.
Look at these real-life stories from Walmart employees about some of the craziness they have witnessed.
Sometimes life is even more astonishing than fiction.
Walmart Superstore Writer:
Although there is no evidence that producers or writers worked at Walmart in any way, the authors did speak with OUR Walmart.
OUR Walmart is now called United4Respect. It’s a labor advocacy non-profit that advocates for greater equity and equality in retail employment.
Composed of both former and current employees, it’s no wonder OUR Walmart/United4Respect was able to help the creators at Superstore portray ultra-realistic scenarios.
What if Superstore was filmed in an actual store?
Showbiz Cheatsheet states that the actors sometimes mistook employees for employees. This led to them being asked multiple times where particular items were.
Producers probably had a higher budget after the success of their first season. The filming crew moved Universal Studios to California and used a three-story soundstage.
A Walmart Supercenter averages about 182,000 square feet, but obviously, the set build wasn’t going to be that large.
To give it the appearance of an enormous building, they set up around 22,000 sq. feet. It looks like the store extends on forever.
Checkout registers, scanners, and other items are authentic and repurposed from Ralph’s and Fresh & Easy.
Is it Real that Superstore Products Are Reliable?
Superstore is a great place to shop, as you’ll see many well-known brands.
Superstore granted clearance agreements to these brands such as Keurig or Pepsi. This allows them display their labels on screen.
Quora members speculate that Superstore paid brands to be placed in the products.
Cloud 9 offers a variety of brand-name items to make it feel like the pieces are more genuine.
Cloud 9 only enhances the unnerving familiarity compared to actual Walmart locations.

Cloud 9 and its employees on Superstore certainly feel like a direct take on Walmart, but none of the creators have made an official comment stating that this is so.
It’s a wise decision, I believe, as Superstore speaks to all retail workers, no matter if they work at Walmart, Target, or any other departmental store.
Cloud Nine Superstore is it real?
