Pre-Emergent Pesticides: The Correct Way To Kill Your Lawn’s Weeds
Here’s the bottom line: Pre-emergent herbicides are essential to lawn weed-control efforts. You must apply it correctly.
All summer long, you stared at these patches of crabgrass angrily. This spring was a difficult one. There were so many dandelions that the breeze blew them away, it almost looked like snow.
Never again, you vow, and go to the garden store for weed-killer … only to find a massive array of confusing herbicide choices.
Here’s a story that will walk you through the main classes pre-emergent herbicides. The pre-emergent product is applied to your lawn and fights weed seeds from ever growing. The University of Georgia Extension Service has a guide for weed control. Although they do not eliminate every weed in the lawn, pre-emergents are very effective at controlling many common weeds. These are the top four choices:
Spring Herbicide Application
The spring pre-emergent herbicide application is used to stop summer annual weevils. The broad and grassy types of summer annuals include both grassy and fern-like weeds. For best results apply herbicides when the soil temperature is around 55 degrees or above for at least 36 to 72 hours (ideally this will be two weeks before seed germination). Most of the USA experience these soil temperatures between March and April. Consult your local county extension service to get up to date soil temperatures in your area. Here is a map that gives a good idea of when to apply in the part of the country you live in.
Two primary methods to use herbicides are liquid formulations and granules. Pre-emergent herbicides that are pre-emergent granules must be soaked in water. This is because the active ingredient has to reach the soil. The herbicide becomes trapped in the pre-emergent granule and is not activated until it is water. This is also true with liquid pre-emergent products because grass and other plants may trap the active ingredient keeping it from reaching the soil during the initial application.
Application for Fall Herbicide
Fall pre-emergent applications are designed to prevent winter annual weeds. They germinate in the autumn months. The timing of your application is crucial to stop winter annual weeds taking over your lawn. Fall pre-emergent herbicides are best applied in autumn, depending on the location.
One of the most widespread winter annual weeds is Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua). It is an extremely hardy weed and can require several applications in consecutive years to be controlled. If soil temperature dips below 70 degrees (soil temp is about 50 degrees), fall weeds can germinate. The best time to apply is the when the daytime highs drop to the mid-70s for about three to five days in a row.
A preemergent application won’t last the following summer. Make a late spring or early-summer pre-emergent (see Spring Herbicide Aplicaiton Map).
The Best Herbicides for Fall
The Best Pre-Emergent Herbicides:
Because of its lowest rates of application, prodiamine (Barricade equivalent), is the best and longest-lasting.
Isoxaben (Gallery version) is effective in preventing a wide range of Broadleaf Weeds. It is a great combination of other Preemergents which will prevent most Grassy weeds.
Oxadiazon (a Ronstar equivalent) can be used as granular in all types of turf and ornamentals.

How Pre-Emergent Hebicide Works
Let’s take a look at three key principles for pre-emergent control to get an idea of the way pre-emergent functions.
Principle #1: Pre-emergent herbicides are designed to control germinating weed seeds.
Pre-emergent targets weeds which haven’t yet sprouted from soil. Pre-emergent should not be applied to weeds that are visible from the ground. This will ensure the highest quality results, as well as avoiding unnecessary labor costs and time lost.
Important! Pre-emergent cannot be used to eliminate weeds and weed seeds.
Only when the weed starts to grow from its seed, and hits the herbicide barrier, will it be destroyed. You can leave seeds dormant so they don’t get harmed from the herbicide barrier. It is because weed control must be a continuous process. There will always be seeds under the surface and a portion will germinate each season. Large infestations must be controlled by applying annually.
Remember, pre-emergent herbicide can affect desirable plants. The same applies to turf. Pre-emergent must not be used in conjunction with seeding turf. Seed first, then apply pre-emergent at least 6 weeks later to allow for lawn establishment. Seed at the latest 3 months following application of pre-emergent.
Principle #2: For best results, the pre-emergent needs to be correctly mixed and spread evenly across the targeted area.
Pre-emergent herbicides need to be mixed correctly for the spray solution to be at the appropriate strength. Take the time to read the manufacturer’s recommendations and don’t forget to calibrate your sprayer!
Thorough coverage is key. Pre-emergents are like a blanket. They must cover all areas where the weed seed cannot germinate. As there are plenty of open spaces for the weeds to grow, spot spraying does not work. According to the manufacturer’s instructions, how much product you should use per 1000 sq. feet or an acre will be indicated. This determines how many gallons of water you need. It usually takes between 1 and 2 gallons to spray 1000 feet.
Principle #3: It is important to water in pre-emergent herbicides.

Getting rid of weeds after an infestation isn’t easy, and the best way to prevent them is by applying the right solutions before they even take root. Use the pre-emergent.
Pre-emergent herbicides, which are chemical options to keep weeds away from ever growing again, are specifically formulated to be effective against specific types and families of weeds.
Crabgrass Preventers: 5 Top Crabgrass Herbicides (Crabgrass Prior-Emergent Herbicides).
Crabgrass, an annual pest that can be difficult to control in spring and summer, should not be allowed to grow. You can find many different crabgrass killing products on the market. However, you should apply a mix of pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides in your spring lawn care. This will reduce the need to use any additional herbicides. Controlling crabgrass is one the most important things cool-season lawn-care nuts do in order to maintain a healthy lawn.
When the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees, crabgrass seeds will germinate within three days. It is a good rule to remember that crabgrass germinates when the forsythia is in full bloom. If you don’t have the proper pre-emergent herbicides in place, crabgrass will still germinate until the ground temperature reaches 70 degrees. You should know when you apply crabgrass prevention. The best way to prevent crabgrass is to use a crabgrass stopper in the early spring. Prodiamine in early April in New England) and a second pre-emergent weed control application in early June. Because the turf hasn’t been pushed yet, it’s not ready for a crabgrass prevention with fertilizer (N–P–K). This is particularly true if your lawn was prepared for winter. You can use them for your second or third application.
Please note that there is a maximum annual rate of Prodiamine per calendar year. This chart is for those who plan to use it in April to stop crabgrass and fall to combat poa annua.

The chemically engineered synthetic herbicides can be used to eradicate weeds. Oxadiazon, prodiamine and dithiopyr are some of the active ingredients that make up synthetic herbicides.

The chemicals in the synthetic pre-emergent herbsicides have an impact on the weeds.
Many contain Prodiamine to prevent chickweed, dandelion and other weeds. Others have Dithiopyr which may prevent goosegrass.
The most common pre-emergent ingredients are:
Prodiamine is a herbicide that prevents the growth of grassy and broadleaf plants like thistle and chickweed. It is difficult to combat nutsedge with Prodiamine.
Dithiopyr: Prevents chickweed, oxalis, clovers, dandelion, bittercress, crabgrass, goosegrass, and annual bluegrass. Dithiopyr has a tough time controlling spurge and broadleaf weeds.
Benefin (aka Benfluralin): Prevents crabgrass, ryegrass, carpetweed, chickweed, annual bluegrass, sandbur, pigweeds, foxtails, goosegrass, and knotweed.
Trifluralin: Prevents Summer grass, annual bluegrass, chickweed, redroot, and red-dead nettle. Trifluralin won’t be your best solution if thistle is a concern.
Isoxaben, which prevents the growth of dandelion. Thistle., clover., and chickweed. Not your best bet for controlling grassy weeds like crabgrass, annual ryegrass, and carpetgrass.
Oxadiazon can be used to prevent crabgrass and clover. Other options are available to protect chickweeds spurge and pearlwort.
You can find one of these ingredients in pre-emergent herbicides. The decision on which one to use will also be based on the herbicide’s selectivity or non-selective properties.
