Every single day, millions of mailpieces are delivered to addresses across the United States by the United States Postal Service.
Sometimes packages are returned to the Post Office by carriers because they cannot be delivered, or due to bad weather.
If you can’t get down to the Post Office right away, you might wonder: How long does USPS hold packages? The answer is right below.
Is the USPS able to hold packages for 2022?
The United States Postal Service can hold mail for 15 days following delivery attempt. This applies to the majority of its mailing services. The USPS issues two notices in each instance. Within 15 days of the last notice, the package will be returned back to the sender.
What can you do to find out if your package is held by the USPS?
When your U.S. If your U.S. Postal Service carrier attempts delivery of a package, but is unable to do so, the carrier will leave you a yellow-colored PS Form 3849.
The PS Form 3849 is the Delivery Notice/Reminder/Receipt, and it’s the note that there is an item waiting for you in your local Post Office.
From my experience, the mail carrier will put the note up at the top and make sure it isn’t hidden under other items (or thrown away).
However, what happens if your parcel is misplaced? What if you accidentally miss it?
Be assured that the Post Office will not only issue the Second and Final Notices, but they also send them out three to five days later than the delivery attempted.
The same PS Form 3849 is there, but it has a bottom-left corner box that says “Final Notice”. If this is checked, then the parcel’s time is approaching.
An area is provided for postal carriers to indicate the end date of their holding period. Once that is done, the parcel will be sent back at the return address.
However, there is an exception to the 15 day holding policy: Priority Mail Express items can only be held for five working days. The Second/Final notices are given after three business days.
How can I find where my USPS parcel is?
You will know the best place to pick up your mail if there is one Post Office located in your town.
However, if your move is close to one or more Post Offices you may be curious how you can find which one holds your parcel.
According to USPS.com, you can learn this information in one of two ways.
The USPS Tracking Page for your parcel will show you the destination once your tracking information has been updated.
If that is not possible, please call 1-800-ASK USPS (1 800-275-8777), and ask for a customer representative.
How can you get a USPS-Package?
Make sure to bring your PS Form 3849 along with your photo identification (for some, a driver’s license, for others, an ID card or passport).
Your Form may not be signed yet. They will ask that you complete it at the counter. After they verify the ID, your names and signatures are in order.
Can Someone Else Pick Up Your Package From The Post Office?
A person can be authorized to collect your package at the Post Office.
But, on the PS Form 3829 you’ll need to type something similar to:
(Named of the retriever) has my authorization to pick up mail at (Your Name).
This note should be followed up with your signature.
How long does USPS keep packages in a PO box for?
If you are unable to fit an item in your PO Box the Post Office sends you notification that you have a parcel that can be picked up at the counter.
They will usually hold the package for 15 days. You will need to check the shipping service. This is similar to a normal package hold.
What Happens When You Forget to Pick Up a Package From the Post Office
USPS will attempt to return the package to its sender after the hold period has expired.
Sometimes though, it’s impossible to return because the return address has changed or isn’t legible.
Mail could be left in these situations to go to the Dead Mail zone, which is where postal workers try find unidentified addresses and return the packages.
It’s good to know that even if you don’t complete the holding period, you still have a chance for your package to reach you.
This isn’t an easy task (it may be on the way back to you), but it is possible.
You can return the package to the sender if the package isn’t returned. One is located in GA and the other is MN.
After scanning the packages, if more than $25 is found, they will be held for another 60 days. Only during these 60 days can you take any action.
To search for your package, you will need to complete a Mail Recovery Center Request.
This covers the Barcode/Tracking number, the packaging size and all contents (as much detail as possible).
Next, wait. USPS will try its best to find your package and send it back.
Ultimately, though, the lesson to be learned is not to miss your initial 15-day window for picking up a package at your Post Office.

USPS will hold most parcels that have not been delivered for up to 15 days. USPS also informs the recipients two times about the status of any parcel they are holding for pickup at Post Office.
All you have to bring is your PS Form 3849 and a valid ID, or you can send someone else to retrieve it with a permission note and your signature.
