Walmart offers a wide range of affordable merchandise that you can purchase online and in-store. If you’re shopping at Walmart’s stores in person, an associate might ask for your receipt.
Can Walmart Check Your Receipt In 2022?
Walmart employees can ask to check your receipt before you leave, but you are within your rights to refuse to show it. Additionally, due to the “Shopkeeper’s Privilege” laws, Walmart associates can force you to show your receipt and even detain you in the store if they suspect you of shoplifting.
Are They Suspecting Me of Shoplifting When I Get a Receipt from Walmart
Walmart associates inspect receipts of customers to deter shoplifters.
According to Walmart spokespersons, every receipt will be checked before customers leave.
If you’re asked for your receipt to prove that you shoplifted, it does not mean you have been charged with shoplifting.
Receipt payments are completely voluntary and Walmart associates may only pursue further action if they have probable cause of believing you’ve shoplifted.
Costco’s rules differ, as you need to provide your receipt for proof of membership.
Walmart will scan my receipt
Sometimes, Walmart associates will ask to scan your receipt, too. This is usually only required when you set the sensors off at the door when leaving the store.
Again, however, Walmart associates asking for receipt scans do not signify that you’re suspected of theft.
This is usually to ensure that the cashier calling you did not forget to scan your item.
Ultimately, Walmart just wants to make sure that all merchandise is paid for. However, not all Walmart stores will scan your receipt.
What happens to your receipt if it is lost before you leave Walmart?
Do not panic if your receipt is lost before you leave Walmart. Once you realise you’ve lost the receipt, your payment card can be used to verify payment.
Using Walmart’s online Receipt Lookup tool, you can get a digital copy of your receipt and show that to a Walmart associate instead! Simply enter the purchase date and location.
The associate that served you may also be able to return and verify that the products were purchased by you.
Can Walmart Prevent You From Leaving The Store?
Walmart does not have the authority to make further actions if an associate refuses to accept your receipt.
If they suspect you shoplifting, you may be taken into custody in the store under the Shopkeepers Privilege laws.
The definition of “reasonable suspicion”, however, will differ from one state to the next. Generally speaking, though, it will be determined by observations of merchandise being taken, customer or staff statements, or surveillance footage.
This suspicion will ensure that associates don’t try to stop you or force you into physical custody.
Walmart now checks receipts
Walmart did not always inspect receipts the same way they do today.
One factor driving the change is an increase in the fight against theft. This was the reason why $3 billion of Walmart’s 2015 losses were accounted. It was only 1% from Walmart’s total revenues.
A second example is the recent addition of self-checkout machines in Walmart stores.
It’s much easier than ever to grab a product without scanning the bag with a self-checkout device.
So, it is likely that more associates have been stationed at the exit doors to check that every shopper’s receipt lines up with the products in their bags. Walmart Canadian stores confirmed this.

Walmart may ask you to verify your receipt before you leave. In fact, they very often do due to significant revenue losses caused by theft.
Walmart associates can’t take further action on your refusal to present your receipt.
The only exception to this is if the associate has reasonable suspicion to believe that you shoplifted an item or items from the store. They may detain you if there is reasonable suspicion.
Are You Able to Refuse to Show Your Receipts?
Can I refuse to give my receipt when asked about shoplifting? You can assert your right and refuse to give your receipt to the employee at the front door if the store hasn’t probable cause to suspect shoplifting.
Walmart Needs to Review your Receipt.
